Finish and trim are what we apply for the visual flourish, to really make things look good, and to sometimes to provide a first line of defense against sun and rain. So they should look good, and keep looking good without a lot of fuss and maintenance. Durability against abrasion, ultraviolet light and wetting affect your choices, as should adaptability--can you easily repair, replace or change it?
The green perspective also emphasizes, as always, responsible sourcing— is the wood from an FSC source? Does the material have a significant recycled content, and can it be easily recycled? Finish and trim can also be thought of as the makeup we apply to our skin. It can look good without containing weird chemicals.
