The mechanical system is basically what will keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. Here the big deal is efficiency, or better, effectiveness: delivering the comfort you want at the least cost at current (and future) energy prices. Effectiveness comes at many points in the system: efficiency of fans, pumps and motors, location, insulation and layout of ducts and pipes, and maintenance of components over time.
Getting to the greenest choice here is not so much a matter of products or systems as expert guidance—finding an engineer or contractor in your area who is familiar with your climate, efficiency strategies, and available systems, and can provide reliable advice tailored to your particular situation.
